Most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Disability Health Insurance

Many people as a result of an injury on the job or some other injury find themselves in a position where they cannot work in gainful employment. When this happens it can be devastating and frustrating as to what to do next.

There are many options when this happens and one of them is disability income insurance. Here are frequently asked questions (FAQs) on this topic:

Q: What happens if I am disabled and I can't work?
A: There are several options when this happens. A disability income insurance policy can take care of list income due to injury in one of three ways: your employer may already have something in place, you may need to purchase an individual policy or you may have access to Social Security Disability Benefits.

Q: How do I find out if my employer has a disability income insurance policy?
A: The best way to find out is to make an appointment with the Human Resource department and talk to the benefits specialist. They will be able to tell you whether this is a part of what you have been paying through them or whether they cover it in another way.

Q: How do I find out more about an individual policy and will they replace all of my income?
A: This may be a separate policy that you will have to purchase in addition to the health insurance you have through your employer or through yourself. The fist thing to do is to check the Internet for these types of policies. The policies will not cover all of your income but most will cover between 50% and 70% of your income.

Q: What is Social Security Disability Insurance?
A: This is a program run by the Federal government and it has certain stipulations about it. If you are blind, disabled or over the age of 65 you may qualify for these benefits. There are basically two types, the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). If you are eligible for this program, you will receive a check each month and you will receive medical coverage.

Q: What about paying my bills and my living expenses?
A: In most situations people will understand about bills as long as you let them know what is going. With your mortgage and daily living expenses, this may be a bit trickier and you might have to rely on family (if this is a possibility) to help. It is important to get a full picture of where you stand though so that you can make plans for the future.

In most situations having a disability will be difficult to adjust to in the beginning but there are a variety of programs that can help you. The point is to do research on other options that may be available to you because of age, type of disability or other criteria. There are many benefits at the city or county levels that people do not know until they investigate the possibilities.
